Punctuation questions test whether a child can make sentences safe and clear. Papers ask for corrections, insertions, or identification of missing punctuation — especially speech marks and apostrophes. Over-comma-ing and under-stopping are the two big failure modes. Teach a simple checklist: does every sentence have end punctuation, are speech marks paired, is the apostrophe possession or omission? Practise on short paragraphs so the skill transfers to creative writing. Under timed conditions, fix end punctuation first, then speech, then commas — that order catches the highest-value errors quickly. In dialogue questions, check the capital letter after the opening speech mark every time — it is one of the most frequent missed marks. Apostrophe checks are faster if you expand the word (it is / it has) — if expansion fails, you almost certainly want no apostrophe. For comma questions inside lists, read the sentence aloud and insert a pause only where a comma belongs — if you would not pause, you probably do not need the comma.
