Fractions are one of the most reliable mark-makers — and mark-losers — in 11+ Maths. Independent and grammar papers both lean on them: simplify, compare, add and subtract with different denominators, multiply and divide, and weave fractions into word problems and multi-step calculations. Children who can only handle unit fractions or who panic when denominators differ lose easy marks. Strong fraction work also unlocks decimals, percentages and ratio later in the paper. Practice should move from clean arithmetic into exam wording — “what fraction remains”, “express as a mixed number”, “which is larger” — because that is how questions actually appear. Under timed conditions, teach children to decide the operation first, then find a common denominator only when needed, and always check whether the final form should be improper or mixed.

Common mistakes

  • Adding numerators and denominators separately (1/3 + 1/4 → 2/7) instead of using a common denominator.
  • Forgetting to simplify the final answer, or simplifying mid-step and losing track of the value.
  • Mixing up multiplying and dividing fractions — especially flipping the wrong fraction when dividing.
  • Leaving an improper fraction when the paper expects a mixed number (or the reverse).
