Measurement questions mix unit conversion with calculation. Papers ask children to convert between mm/cm/m/km, g/kg, ml/l, then add, subtract or compare. Errors usually come from multiplying when they should divide (or the reverse) when moving between units. Independent papers wrap conversions inside word problems about journeys, recipes or packaging. Teach a unit ladder and always write the conversion factor before calculating. Finish by checking the answer has the unit the question asked for — marks often sit on that last detail. A rough estimate in a familiar unit (metres, kilograms) catches many conversion slips before the final box is filled. Under timed 11+ conditions, children who pause to name the method before they calculate — and who check the form of the final answer — keep more marks than those who rush the first approach that comes to mind. Build that habit with short, mixed sets from real papers rather than endless textbook drills of one type.
