Measurement appears in 75 of our 338 ready papers (205 tagged questions). It averages 2.7 questions a paper worth about 1.44 marks each. The typical question allows around 30 sec. It appears in 3 CSSE papers we hold.

Measurement questions mix unit conversion with calculation. Papers ask children to convert between mm/cm/m/km, g/kg, ml/l, then add, subtract or compare. Errors usually come from multiplying when they should divide (or the reverse) when moving between units. Independent papers wrap conversions inside word problems about journeys, recipes or packaging. Teach a unit ladder and always write the conversion factor before calculating. Finish by checking the answer has the unit the question asked for — marks often sit on that last detail. A rough estimate in a familiar unit (metres, kilograms) catches many conversion slips before the final box is filled.

Common mistakes

• Multiplying instead of dividing when converting to a larger unit (or the reverse).
• Mixing units mid-calculation without converting first.
• Forgetting to state the unit in the final answer.
• Misreading capacity vs mass units in a word problem.
