Place value underpins ordering, rounding, decimals and written methods. Papers ask children to say the value of a digit, partition numbers, compare magnitudes, and multiply or divide by 10, 100 or 1000. Weak place value shows up later as decimal and money errors. Teach columns explicitly and practise reading numbers aloud in words. Independent and grammar papers both use “which digit is worth…” stems as quick discriminators. Link this hub to rounding and decimals so the same mental model transfers. A thirty-second column sketch before multiplying by 10/100 often prevents the classic “add a zero” mistake that fails on decimals. Practise writing numbers in expanded form occasionally — it makes digit-value questions feel automatic instead of surprising.
